Merijn is counsel in the Netherlands Restructuring & Insolvency team and the Netherlands Cross-border Asset Recovery team. He specialises in restructuring, insolvency, and dispute resolution, with a special focus on cross-border work. He advises on the full range of restructuring and insolvency work, including advising companies in financial difficulties and acting as restructuring expert, observer, administrator, or bankruptcy trustee. He has extensive experience with WHOA/Dutch scheme proceedings and out-of-court compositions. His practice also includes cross-border asset recovery cases, fraud litigation (prosecuting civil fraud claims) for companies, financial institutions, (foreign) insolvency practitioners and high-net-worth individuals.

Merijn is affiliated with INSOL Europe and INSOL International. He is an INSOL Fellow, having graduated as part of the 2025/2026 Class of INSOL International’s Global Insolvency Practice Course together with a distinguished group of insolvency professionals from around the globe.

Experience
  • Advising a UK-based company as financier in WHOA-proceedings of a Dutch debtor on interim financing and the acquisition of a majority stake of the shares through a WHOA agreement 
  • Advising on financial restructuring and contingency planning, including an analysis of options, negotiations with creditors and preparation of formal procedures for, amongst others (i) one of the largest omni-channel home furnishings retailers in the Benelux and (ii) various private equity investors
  • Advising a software-as-a-service provider in Dutch suspension of payments proceedings where a moratorium agreement was offered to the creditors that was sanctioned by the court
  • Acting as court-appointed administrator and later as bankruptcy trustee of HollandsStroom B.V. (commonly known as Hollandse Energie Maatschappij or HEM), a Dutch energy supplier
  • Acting as court-appointed bankruptcy trustee of Crystal River Cruises Services Coöperatief U.A. (part of leisure and hospitality giant Genting Group), Helpling Netherlands B.V. (online platform for cleaning services), and Cruden B.V. (manufacturer of motion simulators for automotive, motorsport, and training industries)
  • Advising a software-as-a-service provider on a successful out-of-court composition with its lenders
  • Litigating a multi-million claim for a Dutch nutrition brand before the Dutch courts
