Matthew is a Legal Director in our Commercial Disputes team. An experienced disputes lawyer, Matthew has a broad commercial disputes practice and acts for some of the firm's most significant clients, typically on complex and high value disputes. Matthew has particular experience of technically complex fraud claims; and he frequently advises clients on technology and data disputes.
In addition to his extensive experience of representing clients in hard-fought disputes through both court and other dispute resolution procedures, Matthew frequently advises clients on dispute avoidance strategies. Matthew also has significant in-house experience, having spent almost three years in the in-house legal team of a FTSE 100 global food services company.
- Experience
Recent cases on which Matthew has advised include:
- Successfully defending a University in a £110m TCC claim brought by a commercial organisation and patent holder, alleging breach of contract and fraud regarding complex scientific research undertaken and published by the University.
- Acting for a retail logistics software platform provider in international arbitration proceedings concerning a fraudulent IT supplier arrangement inherited by the client following a business acquisition.
- Advising a non-departmental UK public body to successfully defend two sets of parallel judicial review proceedings. The challenges concerned advice given to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero on the compliance of a proposal to decommission the UK North Sea’s first floating oil production storage and offloading vessel.
- Advising an international healthcare provider to successfully pursue a novel and high-value breach of contract claim arising from COVID-19-related restrictions imposed by the NHS on optician practices in England & Wales.
- Defending a middle-eastern oil and gas company in long-running arbitration proceedings concerning a failed gas-delivery project, including opposing the claimants’ worldwide attempts to enforce an arbitral award of more than USD 2.5bn.
