Alex is an Associate in our Commercial Disputes team in Dubai. He has experience of advising clients on cross-border, multi-jurisdictional disputes across a range of sectors, including energy, financial services, telecommunications, and retail & consumer. He also has experience of civil fraud cases and white-collar crime / investigation matters involving sanctions, money laundering, cartels and whistleblowing.
He has experience of both commercial litigation in the courts of England and Wales, the Cayman Islands, and Hong Kong, and in arbitral proceedings supervised by many of the major arbitral institutions, including the LCIA, ICC and HKIAC.
Alex trained at a US firm in UK, including undertaking a six-month secondment to the firm’s Hong Kong office, before qualifying into the international litigation and arbitration group. He joined an international firm on moving to UAE in 2021, before working as legal counsel for the largest privately owned upstream oil and gas company in the Middle East.
- Experience
- Advising at the Grand Court and Court of Appeal stages with a major civil fraud case arising out of the collapse of the Abraaj Group and, specifically, Abdulhameed Jafar’s claim in deceit against certain Abraaj Group entities in respect of loans of over US$300 million procured by fraud.
- Advising Finablr in connection with an investigation into malfeasance within the group and the misappropriation of assets from the company and its group companies, including over US$1 billion of debt hidden from the board and which may have been used for purposes outside of the company.
- Advising Pearl Petroleum with its arbitration initiated against Enerflex - the Canadian EPC contractor of the Khor Mor Gas Expansion Project in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq - and arising out of numerous defective performance issues during the execution of the contract works.
- Advising an Asian bank in relation to multi-jurisdictional regulatory investigations into activities undertaken by the bank in apparent violation of the Sudan sanctions programmes of multiple enforcement agencies.
- Advising Crescent Petroleum in seeking to enforce a US$2.4 billion arbitral award against the National Iranian Oil Company following a dispute over gas supply.
- Advising on an LCIA arbitration concerning the scope of a ‘knock for knock’ indemnity in a contract for drilling services arising out of an incident at a worksite in the Middle East.
- Advising a US-headquartered oil major in an LCIA arbitration, arising out of an M&A dispute between Chinese and US parties, concerning the Chinese tax treatment of offshore assets under the PRC State Administration of Taxation Bulletin 7 of 2015.
- Advising a Latin American bank in a dispute with a disgruntled former partner.
- Assisting with an investigation into a UK metals company and potential competition law infringements.
- Assisting with an investigation into a UK styling company and allegations that company employees may have contacted customers to influence resale prices.
