Agentic AI considerations for payment service providers

To The Point
(5 min read)

Agentic artificial intelligence (agentic AI) is emerging as the next potentially transformative technology for payments. Unlike traditional automation, agentic AI systems can operate with a degree of autonomy, making decisions and taking actions to achieve defined objectives. In payments, this capability raises both opportunities for efficiency and innovation, and significant questions around consumer protection, accountability, and consequently, regulatory compliance. In this article we explore the use cases of agentic AI in a payments context and the regulatory and compliance hurdles that will need to be overcome for agentic AI to be used confidently for payments in the UK.

Introduction

There have been significant advances in how we manage and spend our money. From the first card payments using signatures, to chip and pin, contactless payments and now A2A using online banking solutions. Each development has changed how people interact with retailers and payment service providers, in many cases increasing access to one’s own money and providing more choices for consumers. However, these advancements have also come with increasingly complex regulatory challenges, balancing customer convenience with sufficient checks and friction to protect customers and reduce the risk of fraud.

Within this context, agentic artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as the next potentially transformative technology for payments.
