Jonathan specialises in procurement and commercial law, and heads Addleshaw Goddard’s 60-lawyer strong Commercial Group.

He has recently led our team advising Sainsbury's on its joint venture bringing Netto stores back to the UK, a deal which was nominated for the Legal Business Commercial Deal of the Year, and has worked on a broad range of commercial and procurement matters for Sainsbury's, from its Paralympics sponsorship to the Brand Match Scheme, and also on its suite of 50+ commercial precedents. Other clients include adidas, Diageo and Royal Mail.

Jonathan is ranked in Tier 1 of The Legal 500's commercial contracts section. He is co-author of a leading work on European agency law, now in its third edition, and sits on the City of London Law Society's commercial law committee.

Jonathan is nationally recognised as a procurement expert; the Chambers directory says he is "very much at the forefront of the procurement circuit" and "very client-friendly", having noted previously that "his advice is excellent, particularly in minimising risk", and that "he has great grasp of the rules and gives solid commercial advice".

He was founder of and first chairman of the Procurement Lawyers' Association, and speaks and writes widely on procurement and commercial law topics in the UK and abroad. He wrote an article on the recent changes to procurement law in the Public Procurement Law Review and he co-edits the Government Procurement Review, an annual hardback client's guide to procurement law worldwide.

First ranked in Chambers UK for procurement law, Jonathan frequently advises a variety of public bodies as well as significant private sector clients on procurement law and commercial matters.

Jonathan has won the 'Lawyer of the Year Award' for Government Contracts, in the Who's Who Legal Awards 2016 for the fourth consecutive year.

Jonathan's experience includes:

  • Leading the AG team advising the Danish government on the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel project – an €8 billion, 19km road and rail tunnel linking Denmark and Germany
  • Advising a number of multinational defence contractors on the Defence and Security Procurement Regulations
  • Leading the AG team advising Sainsbury’s on the renewal of its participation in the Nectar scheme
  • Advising a consortium of local authorities on the procurement aspects of a waste public-private partnership contract
