Addleshaw Goddard appointed legal adviser to Government's advanced nuclear programme
International law firm Addleshaw Goddard has been appointed to provide legal services to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero's (DESNZ) Advanced Nuclear Policy and Delivery Team under the UK Government's legal services framework.
The appointment places Addleshaw Goddard at the centre of the UK's advanced nuclear programme, supporting the Government's ambitions to accelerate the deployment of next-generation nuclear technologies, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) and Micro Modular Reactors (MMRs).
The Government's Advanced Nuclear Framework, published earlier this year, sets out plans to establish one of the world's most attractive markets for privately-led nuclear development. The framework is designed to accelerate investment in advanced nuclear projects by creating a clear policy environment covering financing, planning, regulation, fuel supply, skills development and project delivery.
Advanced nuclear technologies are expected to play a critical role in the UK's transition to a secure, low-carbon energy system. Their modular design enables factory-based manufacturing, shorter construction schedules and lower capital requirements than traditional large-scale nuclear plants, whilst creating opportunities to support industrial decarbonisation, hydrogen production, data centres and other energy-intensive industries.
Under the Framework, DESNZ is establishing a new Advanced Nuclear Pipeline and a dedicated business engagement unit to support developers and investors seeking to bring advanced nuclear projects forward in the UK.
The Government has also committed significant investment to the sector, including funding for Sizewell C and the Great British Energy-Nuclear SMR programme.
The appointment further strengthens Addleshaw Goddard's market-leading credentials in the nuclear sector following its role advising the National Wealth Fund on its investment in Sizewell C, one of the UK's most strategically important energy infrastructure projects.
