James Voos is a Legal Director in the Finance Disputes team at Addleshaw Goddard in London, specialising in high-value, complex, and multi-jurisdictional financial disputes. He has experience in litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations, covering a wide range of issues including civil fraud, structured products, mis-selling and enforcement proceedings. 

James is recognised in the Legal 500 as a “key lawyer” for Banking Litigation. Prior to joining Addleshaw Goddard, James gained over 10 years’ experience advising on financial disputes at another leading international law firm in the City. James has also undertaken secondments at UBS AG and Deutsche Bank AG. 

Experience

James’ experience includes advising: 

  • The defendant to a £1.6bn civil fraud claim relating to the raising of capital during the financial crisis (one of the Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases of 2019 and 2020). The claim was dismissed following an 11-week trial.
  • A corporate financial advisor in a Commercial Court claim for unpaid banking fees in connection with a failed Special Purpose Acquisition Vehicle (SPAC) merger (one of The Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases of 2023). 
  • A multinational investment banking and financial services group in a dispute regarding non-settlement of a foreign exchange swap on the terms of the ISDA 2002 Master Agreement. The case contained an important legal clarification of the requirements of a valid notice for the purposes of Section 5(a)(i) of the ISDA 2002 Master Agreement.
  • A major UK financial institution in a £1bn ICC arbitration relating to an equity raise. 
  • The defendant in an inter-bank unjust enrichment claim regarding a cyber fraud and defences of ministerial receipt and change of position. 
  • A financial advisory group in a Commercial Court claim for breach of confidence and misuse of confidential information. 
  • Several banks in high-value mortgage claims involving complex issues of service, capacity, and enforcement as well as the interaction of associated proceedings both in the UK and Hong Kong.
  • A global investment bank in a High Court claim for unpaid fees in relation to a debt raise. 
  • An asset manager in connection with an FCA market abuse investigation. 
  • A major bank in connection with an FCA systems and controls enforcement action.
