Expertise

James qualified into Addleshaw Goddard's pensions team in 2005 and has recently returned after 13 years at the Pensions Regulator. Whilst at the Regulator, James dealt with all aspects of its oversight of defined benefit schemes, including:

  • Advising on the investigation and conduct of the Regulator's avoidance powers in various cases including Boxclever, Silentnight and Carrington Wire. 
  • Advice in relation to corporate restructurings affecting pension schemes where the Regulator was an interested party. Cases include Kodak and UK Coal.
  • Drafting Regulatory policies and other publications, including the Regulator's policy in relation to its new prosecution powers and the draft funding code of practice. 

Since returning to AG, James has advised trustees and employers on a wide range of pensions issues including scheme amendments, equalisation and regulatory compliance. He also has extensive transaction experience including advising on risks and rectification of auto-enrolment non-compliance.
