EXPERTISE

I joined Addleshaw Goddard in March 2023.

Between September 2011 and January 2023, I was working in the Property Legal Team for Network Rail Infrastructure Limited ("NRIL") following my having worked for Clifford Chance from 1988 until March 2009 and for various law firms (including Arnold & Porter) on a self-employed basis from March 2009 until I joined NRIL.

I have had an interest in the railway industry ever since British Rail's privatisation in the 1990s, partly as a result of my role then as the lead real estate assistant at Clifford Chance acting for British Rail in connection with elements of the privatisation including disposal of rail freight divisions and British Transport Police lease structuring. I then became involved in the land development projects for the same industry, including in relation to the initiation of the Solum project and potential developments (such as Hampton Court) relating to stations, residential and commercial sites .

I was also involved (at Clifford Chance) in a wide range of commercial real estate transactions and major projects for a variety of clients , including developments, acquisitions and disposals, joint ventures, business reorganisations , landlord and tenant asset management work and privatisations, for clients including independent companies, government departments and other government controlled companies .

When I joined the legal team at NRIL I worked principally for the  Development team, (also involving Asset Protection teams), with projects including, again Solum, and Hampton Court plus a West Hampstead joint venture, Queen Mary's University student accommodation development, Kew Bridge redevelopment, Blocwork, Earl's Court etc.

I also acted for and dealt with many enquiries over the years at NRIL from the:-

  • Freight team in connection largely with leases to the Freight Operating Companies, the form of which had been developed at privatisation of British Rail and to assist with NRIL's aim to increase the use of freight across the UK largely for potential environmental benefits;
  • Property Services, Depots and Stations Teams.
