Open for business: the new legal landscape for employers
In what has been a tumultuous year for the UK economy, it has never been more important to be on top of the rapidly changing legal landscape. Our annual Employment and Immigration Group Training Day is the unmissable event of the year for in-house employment lawyers and senior HR professionals.
We can't see you in person this year but instead we will be running three events on the first three Thursdays in November. Each event will run from 10am to 11.30am and will include two 40-minute webinars (with a 10-minute break).

Part 1: Open for business (Thursday 5 November)
Session A: What can we learn from 2020? Key themes and trends in employment law from 2020
In this session we review key employment law developments from the past 12 months in employment status, contracts of employment, discrimination and equal pay, unfair dismissal, pay reporting and working time and how these are likely to shape employment law in 2021 and beyond.
Speakers: Shakeel Dad and Rebecca Kitson (Addleshaw Goddard)
Session B: Whistleblowing – a new pandemic?
Whistleblowing has been firmly in the spotlight throughout this year. Protect have reported a surge in calls to their advice line regarding alleged abuses of the furlough scheme and unsafe working conditions, whilst other employees have seemingly found the confidence to report other issues, such as allegations of fraud or harassment whilst away from direct supervision in the office. In this session, Andrew will review the most recent law and trends in this area before critically assessing where the law now stands and what this means for employers, including identifying practical tips and strategies to protect your organisation and reduce ongoing risk.
Speaker: Andrew Burns QC (Devereux Chambers)
Part 2: Open for change (Thursday 12 November)
Session A: The UK's new immigration system from 1 January 2021: How can we prepare for these significant changes?
Following on from our previous webinar where we discussed the basics of the UK business immigration system, this session will focus on the new immigration rules that will apply from 1 January 2021 and how companies should be preparing for these significant changes.
Speakers: Sarah Harrop and Robert Phillips (Addleshaw Goddard)
Session B: IR35 – Working to the new rules
Delayed but not forgotten – with the proposed reforms to IR35 now due to come into effect on 6 April 2021, this refresher session will remind you what you need to do to ensure that your business is compliant when the new rules take effect.
Speakers: Martin Griffiths and Jonathan Fletcher-Rogers (Addleshaw Goddard)
Part 3: Open to the future? (Thursday 19 November)
Session A: Tribunal Litigation in a virtual world: what can we do to make this an easier and more effective process?
With the increasing use of technology for employment tribunal hearings, we take this opportunity to discuss the best ways to achieve an effective and trouble-free tribunal hearing over a Cloud Video Platform (CVP).
Speakers: Tariq Sadiq (Parklane Plowden Chambers) and Andrew Moore (Addleshaw Goddard)
Session B: How to be remotely successful
Six months after lockdown demanded an overnight shift to remote-working, we look at how employers can both overcome the challenges and maximise the opportunities that this brings. Michael and Gemma will discuss how to sustain employee engagement and maintain employee wellbeing when dealing with a largely remote workforce and the likely implications for flexible working and the future of work into 2021 and beyond.
Speakers: Michael Leftley (Addleshaw Goddard) and Gemma Dale (The Work Consultancy)
