Female development and retention is an area of particular interest for us, given the high number of women we employ.
Thanks to our selection of unique female development initiatives, created to support women across the firm and push gender diversity, our Diversity Programme has achieved the following:
- Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2018
- UK Diversity Legal Awards 2017. AG won the 'Managing Diverse Talent' award and gained recognition for its innovative Returner Programme.
- HR in Law Awards 2018. AG won the awards for 'Excellence in Diversity& Inclusion' and the 'Grand Prix' top award for our D&I Programme
We are a signatory to the government's 'Think, Act, Report' initiative, a voluntary programme to improve gender equality in the workplace and share best practice.
Balance for Better
This year's International Women's Day's theme is #BalanceforBetter, which aims to build a gender-balanced world. 2019 is also 100 years since women were able to become lawyers. At AG we recognise the benefits of better balance in our business, and are making great strides to increase the proportion of females at senior levels, while recognising there is still work to do. We continue to invest in our established internal female development programmes, designed to encourage women to aspire for senior positions within our firm and develop the skills that will help them succeed.
We have been running our flagship programme, "How to Flourish", for the last seven years. During this time we have worked with just under 300 women, with a long-term goal of increasing gender diversity at senior levels, and continue to work with them through ongoing alumni activities, master classes and networking events. It is a unique initiative for our firm in that around one third of each cohort are in house lawyers working for our clients and contacts. Feedback is always exceptional:

Returning to the legal profession – Opportunities 2019
The firm supports the work of the Women Lawyers' Division of The Law Society, and our 'returner' opportunities are aimed at solicitors who have been out of the profession for an extended period (due to a variety of circumstances) but are looking to make a return. The schemes are designed to help women re-experience life in a commercial law firm, give them an insight into the current legal market, develop their networks, review their career options, as well as equip them with the tools and skills they require to enable them to return.

Support for working parents and carers
We have significantly increased the level of support offered to working parents and carers, including the introduction of a maternity buddy scheme, lunches for new parents, webinars and seminars on subjects of interest to working parents and carers, and support with sourcing childcare. We also offer enhanced pay for employees wishing to take Shared Parental Leave which matches our generous maternity pay package.
