A lot of the much needed discussions which have and will take place at COP26 are around the ever important "how".

However, in my eyes, a day like today focussed on youth and public empowerment is a great reminder of the "why", while still concentrating on how to bring about necessary change.

You don't need to look too far to see that climate change is becoming a big concern for young people. Perhaps it's to do with a greater access to information available to today's youth when compared to previous generations, or maybe it's an awareness that the detrimental effects caused by the global issue, will affect the young more severely. Whatever the reasons, it's so important to include their voices on such a big stage and for them to not just be heard, but to lead discussions. After all, some of the young people involved in the discussions at COP26 will likely stay involved for the rest of their careers.

Another focus, which I hope is covered in the discussions today and in the coming weeks, is how to bring about a society wide approach to climate action. It's certainly not an area I would claim to have much knowledge in, or any idea how to get to the desired outcome, but events like COP26 are where I (and I expect many others) have to trust that better informed people can come together and help drive progress.

Notwithstanding my admitted lack of in depth knowledge, I personally hope the aim is to get to a level of public drive and commitment, where everyone is backing the plans and pledges put together by governments, and above doing our own bit individually, is willing and able to call out employers, energy providers, banks, governments etc. That would be public empowerment for me.
