James is a technology, media and intellectual property (IP) specialist with extensive experience in sport and media matters. He heads the firm's Technology Group.

James advises on the acquisition and exploitation of IP rights, including trademarks, patents and copyright. In relation to sports and media, this includes broadcasting rights contracts, sponsorship, merchandising, advertising and sales promotion, including copy clearance, Advertising Standards Authority complaints and comparative advertising.
James has advised suppliers, sponsors or governing bodies in relation to a number of high profile events, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the FIFA World Cup, the Rugby World Cup and the Indian Premier League.

He advises on information technology and communications contracts, including outsourcing and procurement particularly in the financial services and retail and consumer markets where he has advised on large-scale technology and telecoms procurements and outsourcing, including cash handling, card processing, cheque and card clearing for a range of FTSE 100 companies and equivalent sized organisations. James was one of the authors of the firm's Contracting for Excellence methodology.
