Before joining Addleshaw Goddard, Jay worked in-house at Inmarsat, a satellite services provider, and prior to that at Arcadia Group, the UK's largest privately owned fashion brands group. Before his transition in-house, Jay acted on a range of corporate and commercial matters at Nabarro (now CMS) and DWF.

During his time in private practice Jay advised on a number of mergers and acquisitions, venture capital investments, joint venture projects, shareholders' agreements and corporate governance matters.

While at Arcadia, Jay assisted in expanding the group's presence internationally, negotiating franchise and wholesale agreements with local partners. He also advised on the divestment of Topshop's stake in the IVY PARK brand to Parkwood, Beyoncé's investment company, and on the buyback of a Topshop franchise from a franchisee that had been placed into administration.

At Inmarsat, Jay supported the group's Enterprise business unit, assisting in the execution of the company's Internet of Things strategy. Later he supported the Government business unit, negotiating contracts with governments and their prime contractors to provide them with bespoke solutions in the space and military sectors. Jay also assisted on the public-to-private takeover of Inmarsat by a consortium comprised of private equity and pension fund investors, helping to procure consents from various governments to proceed with the transaction.
