Matt is a Managing Associate in Addleshaw Goddard's Global Investigations team, specialising in international trade compliance and corporate crime. He has particular experience advising clients in relation to trade and financial sanctions measures, dual-use and military export control requirements and anti-bribery matters.  Matt provides ongoing advisory support to in-house teams and senior management on operational compliance issues, helps companies to develop and implement robust and effective internal controls and manages regulatory investigations into actual or suspected compliance violations.  Matt is the UK representative member of AT+ICA, a leading European network of lawyers specialising in international trade matters.


Matt's experience includes:

  • providing ongoing support to a FTSE 100 company on international trade compliance issues throughout the supply chain, in particular in relation to EU and UK financial sanctions programmes, export controls and customs requirements
  • advising a multinational PLC on the practical implications of EU and US sanctions measures relating to Iran, Russia and Ukraine
  • advising a large multinational active in the oil and gas and mining industries on the implications of new US sanctions designations of Russian counterparties
  • advising a UK PLC active in the petrochemicals sector on the implications of sanctions measures on Iran's energy sector, including export-related restrictions, (now historical) EU controls on the transfer of funds to/from Iranian persons and on contractual disputes resulting from the imposition of sanctions measures
  • advising a UK PLC active in the materials science sector on UK, EU and US export and sanctions restrictions, including in relation to sales to customers or end-users located in countries subject to sanctions measures and dual-use export control requirements
